Allow me to begin by saying in no instance am I defending, condoning, or justifying the shooting of Youtube employees by Nasim Aghdam. What I do want to address is when censorship is warranted and when it is not warranted via Youtube or other tech services on the Internet.
Nasim Aghdam, who also went by the alias Nasime Sabz was angered by via Youtube that drove an unstable mind to wreak havoc. Prior to Nasim’s attack on Youtube workers, she was complaining about being demonetized on Youtube. Although it differs year to year the payment is about $7.60 dollars for every thousand views. For someone that has a million views it would be a nice way to earn money, and some or even many do. Youtube recently initiated a new algorithm to demonetize accounts that they deemed as offensive. This may encompass visually offensive material or verbally offensive as in “Hate Speech”. Google/Youtube also hired thousands of people to judge what the algorithm caught as hate speech and offensive posts are indeed just that. We will get more into that in a moment.
Nasim was a Vegan and created animal rights videos. She also made videos about Vegan recipes, and health and exercise stretching videos. Her videos were amateurish, odd, quirky, and never a smile. She pointed out that for three hundred thousand views Youtube demonetized her to 10 cents total. She also mentioned that her stretching health videos were flagged as not suitable for children. I have seen her exercising videos. She was simply an attractive woman in a leotard stretching with instructions as a zillion other health and exercise videos by others do. Nasim mentions a good point on her website that videos of Beyonce and Miley Cirus are more offensive.
However, while Youtube may have unjustly flagged her exercise videos, they were absolutely correct in the demonetization of her account for inappropriate video content that she did post for her vegan/animal rights topic. She had posted videos, pictures, of dogs being skinned alive. This was not done as some morbid entertainment video, but to show the horror of abuse of animals. To Nasim, this was an atrocity and she wanted to make the public aware, but these videos were too extreme. Unless Youtube ever offers and extreme content of a separate login to view extreme protest videos, etc. we must protect children and those that would be offended by torture to animals, etc. It is a double edge sword. Free Speech vs. extreme topics, and who decides what is passable to post and what is not.
I would suggest to Youtube that it would be better to block flagged content from a member so no one can view it pending opportunity to edit or delete by the account holder after notifying the member of the block. leaving non-flagged content from a member un-demonetized. However, Youtube makes money if they don’t have to pay money out (A penny saved is a penny earned), so I doubt my suggestion would ever see the light of day. Also, I do recognize that even my suggestion opens me up to criticism with concerns of what is offensive and extreme, and who decides that, and can that be abused via a monitor’s agenda.
However Youtube, who is owned by Google was part of the hate speech police hiring spree. This was a project by many tech giants to hire thousands of employees. https://nypost.com/2017/12/05/youtube-is-hiring-10000-people-to-police-offensive-videos/
Google, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, all participated in this task. Zuckerberg of Facebook said to Congress he hired 20 thousand to weed out hate speech, offensive posts, videos, etc. However, he could not answer many Congressmen/Congresswomen what exactly is hate speech. There are obvious examples of hate speech, but there is also a blurred line. What may be proper for you, may be hate speech to me, and vice a versa. To some the first amendment, and free speech only applies to them, and when they hear someone else use their first amendment rights, they scream “HATE SPEECH!”. So, a person at Youtube, Facebook, etc. may deem your support for Trump as hate speech and demonetize your account (this is being done, watch the Next News Network as an example… https://www.youtube.com/user/NextNewsNetwork ). Youtube, is correct to flag inappropriate videos such as Nasim’s dog abuse videos, but this algorithm snags conservatives because their views do not correspond with those that work at Youtube. In short, if you criticize Obama, Hillary, Democrats, liberalism, etc., you get the Hammer dropped on your account, but criticize Trump and you continue to make money.
Watch This James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas video about Twitter’s employees blocking conservatives just because it goes against their liberal agenda… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64gTjdUrDFQ
Diamond and Silk are the latest to this new form of Nazi book burning. Their Facebook account was being toyed with. Facebook was limiting their shares, likes, comments, making their millions of followers voices diminished. Prager University is suing Google for censoring searches, and Youtube conservative videos. Prager U. is big, but even little conservative accounts are being set aside so you can barely find them in Youtube, even with a direct search.
A few months ago I wrote an article “We Need New Googles, Youtubes, and Facebooks”. That article is more poinint as each day goes by. You can read it here… https://themartyoradioshow.wordpress.com/2018/01/04/conservatives-need-new-googles-facebooks-and-youtubes/
Again I must state I do not defend Nasim’s actions. In truth I believe she could have taken her anger with Youtube and channeled it in a positive way to create change, and be a trumpet for Freedom Of Speech. Continue her non-offensive exercise videos, and not post visually upsetting animal abuse videos to make her point for animal rights. However, she was not stable. To shoot people over videos, and algorithms takes a disturbed mind, But for us who think of ourselves as sane may share in her initial frustrations with demonetizing and being flagged via Youtube and other Internet sites. We just vent and challenge them with words, not guns.
The big picture is Youtube is indoctrinating minds to think left and liberal. incentives to produce identity politics, socialism, reward liberal behavior, etc. all while preventing views they don’t like. The Internet was the last frontier of free thinking. Liberty, and free speech is the enemy of the left. These freedoms on the Internet are quickly going away. The left has already taken over our educational system K-12, our colleges and universities, the media, the entertainment industry, and just about everywhere else. Now they have their sites on taking over the Internet.
May I remind everyone of the great Benjamin Franklin who said “Freedom of speech is a principal pillar of a free government; when this support is taken away, the constitution of a free society is dissolved, and tyranny is erected on its ruins.”
Ironically, our Founding Father’s would be demonetized on Youtube if they were alive today.
