How did we go from controlled immigration via Ellis Island to millions of illegal Immigrants? My Grandmother and my father came via Ellis Island, and my father described seeing the Statue of Liberty as his ship passed by as the most emotional memory of his youth. Back then people assimilated. It was tough. They were poor, worked hard, and didn’t have Welfare, Food Stamps, healthcare, etc. Now? While North Korea, Iran, arrest and jail, even execute those crossing their borders, we reward those that cross our boarders.
Protecting our boarders protects our sovereignty. Contrary to what people think, The Constitution does NOT state it is the Federal government’s role to protect our boarders, but the Supreme court ruled that Article 1, Section 8 in the 10th amendment does allow for Congress to set limits to immigration, but what if they don’t? (as they are not). Instead we have thrown open the gates with promises of amnesty. Eric Holder takes to court Arizona over immigration laws. Boarder agents are handed out pamphlets that state do not shoot back (With rubber bullets mind you), but hide instead. This administration through Homeland Security released detainees in the care of ICE and thousands in prison, stopping deportation, and at the same time fudging the numbers that the White House claims deportations are up (Nope). The claim that releasing thousands of dangerous illegal immigrants was: “These are low level criminals”, and was due to budget cuts. Low level criminals? Key word: CRIMINALS! To which the media reported that some that were let out were very dangerous criminals. Think of this in terms such as this: These unsafe people were released to be on the same streets of children. http://standwitharizona.com/blog/2013/02/26/outrage-dhs-releases-thousands-of-illegal-aliens-from-prison-citing-budget-cuts/
Now we have protestors being backed by Michelle Obama, as she recently tweeted to supporters of amnesty “We’re with you” http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/11/26/Michelle-Obama-Tweets-Amnesty-Fasters-We-re-With-You , and Obama staged invited illegal immigrants to act as a impromptu heckler http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2013/11/stunner-illegal-alien-heckler-was-invited-by-white-house-to-obama-speech-video/ . As well as protestors storming boarder patrol agents prevent them from doing their job. Issuing permits during the government shutdown for a protest rally on the Mall in Washington for Immigration reform, yet turning down vets and bikers during this time. The list goes on and on. It is in the news almost each day.
The Dream Act, or if the President signs an Executive Order for amnesty calling it something else, is the latest radical/liberal/socialistic ploy. As upsetting as it is for me to say this it is even many Republicans supporting immigration reform, even at their own political expense . Twenty to thirty million illegal immigrants would with most certainty become Democrats. Many states now offer illegals tuition discounts, immediate welfare qualifying, housing, and food stamps. California says they can even serve on juries, and they have recently passed a bill allowing illegals to have driver licenses. How about healthcare? Did you know they have it now? It is not Obamacare, but what about Obamacare? I am sure you recall the “YOU LIE!” moment at the President’s State of the Union speech when the President said “Under this bill undocumented will not receive healthcare”) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgce06Yw2ro . Well, if they become legal, they do, and subsidized to boot. Not bad considering If you cross the North Korean boarder illegally you get 12 years hard labor, or as two Americans found out by entering Iran, received 8 years in jail. In Mexico if an American enters illegally they are deported or jailed.
In a rare moment in time, the black population that swears by Obama’s every word oddly enough do not all agree with Obama on immigration. This one topic finds the black population frustrated as their unemployment statistics are much higher than the national averages. Thus, instant legal workers means taking jobs away from the black population. At least that is what I am hearing in my discussions with my friends of that race persuasion.
I also believe in economics 101. Meaning, if illegals become legal, labor laws will apply. The left argues that they are already here, and can be taxed on wages. True, but the wages they are getting now will have to be upgraded to conform with labor laws. Thus, all companies passing down their raising of prices to you, the consumer, middle class, and every class for that matter. They will also be heavily subsidized. Food stamps, welfare for some, etc. negating any tax collection as they may not make enough, so your taxes must be increased to cover the entitlement expense growth. As it stands now illegals cost the American tax payer 113 billion dollars … A YEAR! http://www.fairus.org/publications/the-fiscal-burden-of-illegal-immigration-on-u-s-taxpayers
I myself am torn emotionally about this topic. While I know all too well about the need to secure our boarders, and not with a wave of a pen find 20 to 30 million new democrats in America. I know many illegal immigrants. Mainly Mexican, and South America men. We are friends. Or at least at work. We laugh, even though many of them speak no English. We communicate like old time cowboys speaking to Indians in old westerns for the first time. Hands and gestures. I teach them a few words, they teach me a few words, and we enjoy each others company. I will also say they’re hard work amazes me. Being illegal they work 7 days a week, each week, and if they need a day off it is their responsibility to find a replacement for that day. I respect their trying to better themselves by being in America when in their own lands they were economically suffering.
Talking to one who speaks English very well told me he has not been home in 20 years. He sends money back to his family. Only recently due to his mother being very ill, he returned home, and I wished him well.
I also know one man named Domingo. Domingo came here legally through the immigration process. Although he has been here over 20 years his English is horrible, but we manage to have great conversations as I catch what he is trying to say most of the time. Three years ago Domingo made me proud of him as he became an American citizen. Again through proper channels. You would not find a greater American Citizen then he. He loves America, he loves what America stands for, and he is NOT a Democrat. He is a conservative that speaks highly of Ronald Reagan and not so highly, very low in fact of Obama. He himself does not support amnesty. After all, he came here the legal way, not illegal, and feels people who snuck in the country broke the law. Yes, regardless if they are fine people, they broke the law. This makes Domingo frustrated that many people like him who do try to do the right thing, become moot, as those that didn’t may just get a pass without the wait. I respect both of these types of immigrants I speak of above, but what are we if we are no longer a nation of laws?
As much as I respect the illegal immigrants that I know, to me America must uphold their immigration laws. Not just because we must cherish our sovereignty, and not just keep the store door open for all to enter at anytime, but economically. An Executive order making illegal immigrants legal in a snap of a finger would be catastrophic on the national debt, tax payers, workforce, and economical infrastructure such as skyrocketing inflation (which we are already in the midst of).
On the surface it does sound great to allow these good people to become legal. It is kind, it is thoughtful, it is also wrong. Or at least the Dream Act, or Executive Order would be wrong. I believe in issuing legal work permits for these wonderful people and deporting those who commit crimes. In many instances we already do issue work visas, but not to illegals. Allowing this would bring in revenue as they can be taxed, but they would not be allowed to partake in citizen benefits, or entitlement programs unless they pay into it. After two years they must reapply.
A fence will not work if it is not completed. A fence will also not work if boarder guards are few, or ordered to do nothing. I find it ironic that they have been issued rubber bullets, yet Homeland Security has bought more “REAL” bullets than our army could use in ten years. Kind of makes you wonder what for? Sigh, perhaps that will be an article in itself one day here. We must secure our boarders. When people realize they can come here illegally, and have a pathway to citizenship? A wave that can not be held back will occur.
Assimilation must occur as well. If you want in America, you must become Americanized. I am not saying give up your culture. Irish don’t, Italians don’t, etc. But in the case of Islam? Leave Sharia Law out of America. Learn our history, as it will be yours too. Understand the Constitution, and not try to change it. We are a Constitutional Republic. Many think we are a Democracy, but no. Understand our laws, and if we say Merry Christmas, don’t force down our throats we must say Happy Holidays. America’s demographics are changing rapidly. We will not survive if we become hundreds of individual cultures independent of a base of American culture. We are a melting pot, yes, but diversity can be either good or bad. No assimilation? Bad, Assimilation? Good. God Bless America, and to all that come here legally.
